Yoga for Back Pain – YouTube – Can Yoga Relieve Back Pain? Alvarado Hospital Expert

Yoga offers effective treatments and even cures for some forms of herniated discs. Cases that were diagnosed as needing surgery have effectively been treated with yoga.

As we know, herniated discs (also knows as ruptured disks and slipped discs) are the major source of back pain in adults and is caused by the gel-like discs that cushion our vertebrae rupturing. Under normal conditions, these discs dehydrate during the day due to the stress and strain of activity and load bearing and they rehydrate at night when we sleep and give them rest. The following two exercises are a great help and should be done when you are rested.

1. Lie down on your back, bend one of your legs and press the knees as close to your body as you can comfortably with your arms. Release the pressure for a moment and then press again, repeating this five or six times, holding the pressure each time for half a minute or so. Repeat with the other leg. Then bring both legs up at the same time and repeat again.

2. Lie face down on the floor with your feet together. Place your palms on the floor beside your chest and raise your trunk up, tilting the head back and inhaling as you do so. Hold this pose for ten seconds and then slowly lower the body back to the ground. Repeat this exercise five or six times.

Please understand that these treatments should be used with the cooperation of your physician and under the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher.
